Throughout the Great Lakes region, cardinals can often be seen sheltering and feeding among the sumacs. As the seasons progress and the deep red sumac gradually darkens, the male cardinal keeps his vivid crimson colouring, bringing a welcome flash of brightness to the changing landscape.

Cardinals are often associated with hope, vitality, remembrance and the comforting presence of someone we miss. Here, the bird appears almost like a small sentinel, quietly observing the world around him.
