What’s in My Kitchen?
What’s in the Kitchen for October?
October in my kitchen is about soups, bread, warm drinks and a little practical baking as the colder weather settles in.
I’ve just made a broccoli, cauliflower and Canadian cheddar soup, and I’ve been working on Green-Eyed Dragons, a breakfast from my childhood that I now make with slightly wilted spinach and a white or cheese sauce. Sourdough bread bowls, carrot soup, pumpkin coffee and tea, and my café au lait and thé au lait have also been keeping me busy.
Link to the Cheesiest Soup... well... it is! Double cheddar and all the tips I picked up working in kitchens, plus my own education through trial and error made this soup.
Next are the morning citrus buns, oatmeal breads and more soups. I’m planning rich-tasting tomato soup made from tinned tomatoes, butternut squash soup and a chowder. There are also pumpkin-shaped sourdough loaves in the plans, along with whipped shortbread and some puff pastry baking. Cheese twists and apple turnovers as we move from autumn to winter.
Canadian Thanksgiving falls on October 12 this year. We celebrate on the second Monday in October, while the United States celebrates on the fourth Thursday in November. Our earlier celebration fits the harvest season in much of Canada, where the growing season finishes sooner. The holiday’s date changed several times before our October date was fixed in 1957. (A little history for those of you who are interested.)
I’m concentrating on food you can enjoy throughout the autumn: a good bowl of soup, bread for dipping, something warm to drink and a few things worth turning the oven on for.
Making and baking things that suit your life, and my own.
There is plenty happening this season. Please check out YouTube and have a look through the website for new educational material and other ideas. Your likes and comments really do help my channel, I appreciate it when you drop by the old blog too, but many more things will be migrating here and I will be updating the older recipes in 2027 and likely... into 2028. I am hopeful the cookbooks will be ready by about 2027 second quarter. There is a lot in my kitchen. LOL!
