Freezier Weebles - Documenting their sightings

It’s okay, I haven’t lost my mind.

I have just returned from a walk with Tori. Fall is in her glory, and the grass is scattered with colourful leaves, acorns and maple keys. There is another tree I walk by occasionally, and its seeds are turning colour. I think it’s a poplar. The little seeds around those keys remind me of antennae, so my Freezier Weeble stories began floating around in my brain again.

What’s a Freezier Weeble?

A Freezier Weeble can come in many shapes and sizes, and they are born in the fall. Acorns, beechnuts and maple keys are what create them. I see them sleeping among the leaves, not yet ready to wake up.

An acorn with maple keys makes one of the prettiest Freezier Weebles. Depending on the species of maple, or another tree that grows samaras, the wingspan of a Freezier Weeble can vary considerably. I have seen long, elongated wings that look almost waspish compared with the compact maple samaras that also contribute to the Freezier Weebles’ many wing styles.

I don’t have time to sketch the all of the Freezier Weebles I saw on our walk today, but, as with most things I do, I’ll make a note. I’ll begin drawing detailed diagrams and listing their differences in size as I find them this fall. ( I made this quick little painting while writing this out.) They last from fall until the heaviest snowfall, when the first blanket of heavy Canadian snow puts them to sleep for the winter.

They have cousins in the spring, too. You can usually find them among the rose hips and spring spiderwebs after the snow clears, but they hide a little more cleverly.

These are things I notice on my walks. Little parts of nature that seemingly have nothing to do with one another can drift into small piles and begin to resemble something alive, if you simply stop and look at them.

Next time, I’ll draw some more detaileddiagrams and place them here on the website so you can see the Freezier Weebles the same way I do.

It’s time for that coffee now. I have a few paintings to finish before I package some fiction stories, too.
